Why It Is Important
We believe that arts and creativity connect us to our heritage, to humanity, and to each other, fuel innovation and 21st century skills, help shape our identity and deepen attachment to this place, foster cross-cultural understanding and appreciation, and bring beauty, joy, and learning to our lives.
Arts Council Silicon Valley and 1stACT Silicon Valley merged in 2013 to create the regional nonprofit Silicon Valley Creates.
Silicon Valley Creates builds on the Arts Council’s 30-year history of support to the arts community through regional grantmaking, professional development, the Artsopolis Network, the ArtsConnect program, and the Artist Laureate program, and builds on 1stACT Silicon Valley’s dynamic role in incubating innovative programs and initiatives like SPUR San Jose, School of Arts and Culture at MHP, Discover the Unexpected/LiveSV, MALI (Multicultural Arts Leadership Institute), and nurturing partnerships like ArtSpark.
Former 1stACT Managing Director and CEO, Connie Martinez, leads SVCREATES as its CEO. The merged SVCREATES team is committed to raising the visibility and value of the arts, growing investment in arts and creativity, increasing participation in creative outlets, and building the capacity of the cultural ecosystem.
