- Mission:
NSTEP’s mission is to dramatically improve students' understanding of science, math and technology and the real world applications of these disciplines, to help bridge the achievement gap for underserved and minority students. It’s our strong belief that in an era when information flows freely and instantaneously across the globe that geography, scheduling conflicts or economics need no longer stand in the way of possible academic success. Our main program, Study Buddy – Online Math Homework Help, provides free, instant, live, math assistance for minority, underserved students in all middle and high school math subjects. Our vision is that no child who is struggling with math will go without help for lack of money or resources.
- History:
NSTEP, formerly the Electronic Industries Foundation (EIF) was founded in 1977 to lead philanthropic initiatives on behalf of the electronics industry. Our initial goal of placing handicapped persons in mainstream jobs throughout the electronics industry eventually led to the employment of 15,000 handicapped persons across the country. In addition, we provided scholarships to more than 80 students to pursue engineering and technology degrees. With the passage of the Americans with Disabilities Act in 1990, EIF gradually redefined its purpose toward educating youth, primarily in the fields of science, technology, engineering and math (STEM). Working with schools, teachers, and volunteers from the electronics industry, we offered a 12-week online technology competition which matched teams of middle and high school students with mentors from industry and the sciences to solve a problem using technology. In 2002, EIF changed its name to the National Science and Technology Education Partnership (NSTEP) to reflect its new mission in education. In 2008, we launched our now main program: Study Buddy – Online Math Homework Help. This program is specifically targeted towards traditionally underserved groups to address the achievement gap that exists in our schools today. In all of our education programs, our strategy has been to harness volunteer talent and use tools already popular with youth, such as technology, the internet, texting, and peer-to-peer learning. Also in 2008, our organizing entity, the Electronic Industries Alliance, dissolved into individual groups; as such, NSTEP now operates independently.
