  • Mission:
  • Northeast Parent & Child Society’s mission is to protect children, preserve families, and strengthen the communities we serve. It is not enough to simply provide young people with respite from abuse, neglect, poverty or adversity. That’s why since 1888, we have guided children, youth and families from 32 counties in New York's Capital Region, New York City and the St. Regis Mohawk Reservation through their journey into adulthood. Our broad spectrum of residential, special education, family foster care, mental health, family preservation, and career services for more than 7,000 people per year means we offer immediate assistance to those in need as well as ongoing support to make life-changing impacts for those in our community. Thanks to widespread public support, young people are getting off public assistance and onto local ledgers, both as quality employees and valued customers.

Our Residential Services at the 12-bed Schaffer Children’s Diagnostic Shelter serve children ages 4-17; 68 males and females ages 11-18 at the Children’s Home; 20 youth ages 14-21 at two Group Homes; and 14 young adults up to age 21 in our Supervised Independent Living Apartments. The School at Northeast is an 853 special education school for 152 students in grades 6-12. Our Therapeutic Foster Family Program provides more than 200 loving foster parents who foster youth to age 21. Mental health services serve young adults through age 24 and family members. Family Preservation Services help families keep their children at home or ensure that children who return home are not placed outside the home again. Low-to-moderate income Schenectady County residents ages 18-24 who need help completing their high school education or finding employment are eligible for Career Development Services.

  • History:
  • Northeast Parent & Child Society’s history traces back to February 18, 1888, when a group of women from the City of Schenectady formed an orphanage called “The Home for Destitute Children.” Each woman raised $4 a month to cover operating costs associated with helping the children move from homelessness to homes.

While our agency's basic philosophy remains the same, the cost of caring for people in need has risen dramatically. We are proud to have helped more than 100,000 children, young people and family members to build brighter futures.

We are committed to helping at-risk young people start rewarding careers and give back to their communities. Dedicated staff from our transitional and career services works with our young adults and local community leaders to provide the resources needed for success.
