General

  • Mission:
  • The mission of the Rainbow House is to keep children safe and to support families in crisis through prevention, assessment and intervention in child abuse and neglect. We achieve our mission through three programs: The Children’s Emergency Shelter, Regional Child Advocacy Center and Sol House, and our Homeless Youth Program.

  • History:
  • Rainbow House Child Abuse and Neglect Emergency Shelter began in November 1986. Kathy Hughes, a foster parent of many years, founded Rainbow House with the vision of providing a safe, stable home-like environment where keeping sibling groups together and maintaining regular school attendance are priorities.

Many years later, the Inter-Agency Council on Child Abuse & Neglect (ICAN) and the Rainbow House Board of Directors recognized the need for and benefit of a Child Advocacy Center in mid-Missouri. In August 1998, the Rainbow House Child Advocacy Center began conducting forensic interviews of children who were victims of sexual or physical abuse, or who were witnesses to violent crimes. The Child Advocacy Center has remained true to the Rainbow House mission of keeping children safe and supporting families in crisis.

In November 2007, Rainbow House began central Missouri’s only transitional living program for homeless youth. In response to calls from homeless teens, Rainbow House opened Sol House, which provides stable housing and life-skills training to youth ages 16-21. Sol House is able to provide services to eight youth for up to 18 months. The goal of the program is to teach these youth to live independently, maintain employment and/or acquire their GED or high school diploma.
