- Mission:
Children’s Hospital & Research Center Oakland is a pediatric medical center that serves the San Francisco Bay Area, Northern California and beyond. Its mission is to ensure the delivery of high quality pediatric care for all children through regional primary and subspecialty networks, a strong education and teaching program, a diverse workforce, state of the art research programs and facilities, and nationally recognized child advocacy efforts.
Established in 1912, Children’s Hospital & Research Center Oakland offers a broad range of medical and health care services including a large tertiary Neonatal Intensive Care Unit, a Pediatric Trauma Unit, and a full spectrum of specialty medical care services including HIV/AIDS services. It serves as the pediatric primary health care provider for many of the East Bay’s culturally and linguistically diverse children and families who are predominantly low-income, with approximately 71% on Medi-Cal.
- History:
Children's Hospital Oakland is the oldest pediatric medical center between Los Angeles and Seattle and has provided exceptional medical care for children in the region for almost a century.
In 1912, Mabel Weed, a social worker, and Bertha Wright, a nurse, founded Children’s Hospital, then called the “Baby Hospital,” and its first home was the stable of the old McElrath mansion in Oakland. Today, Children’s Hospital’s medical center offers outstanding patient care with 191-licensed beds, and also supports nationally recognized pediatric teaching and research.
Children’s Hospital has expanded its role over the years. From modest beginnings it’s grown, not just into a medical “safety net” for San Francisco Bay Area children, but also into a regional pediatric medical center with specialized staff and facilities able to treat rare illnesses and health problems.
Because full-service hospitals just for children are extremely specialized, few communities can support one. Children’s is proud to be one of only 45 freestanding children’s hospitals in the nation, not connected to a university or other institution. Like the others, Children’s Hospital Oakland recognizes that children’s medical needs are vastly different from those of adults.
That’s why Children’s Hospital designs its healthcare especially for children. At Children’s Hospital Oakland we don’t measure things by adult standards and divide by half. As the only independent children’s hospital in the San Francisco Bay Area, we give kids our undivided attention.
