Palaeontology and Geobiology Mission
The institute's objective is to provide an integrative research environment devoted to unveiling the proximal and ultimate causes shaping life on earth.
- History:
Paleontology and Geobiology
Since established in 1843, the Paleontology and Geobiology institute of the LMU Muenchen has been dedicated to the study of earth-life interactions. The institute became famous under the direction of Karl von Zittel, at the end of the 19th century. During WW2 bombings ca. 80% of the institute's collection was destroyed, the most important fossils were saved the museum staff. After WW2 the collection was reunified. The institute was moved to its current location (Richard-Wagner Str. 10) in the 1950s. Currently, the facilities of institute include a fully equipped molecular biology laboratory, a stable isotope laboratory, microscopy laboratory (including SEM), among other. The institute's research is diverse, comprising classical paleontological research, taxonomy and systematics, and molecular geo- and paleobiology. We aim to contribute to a better understanding of the proximal and ultimate causes shaping life on earth through the integration of modern technics and “classical” research.
