- Mission:
The overall mission of the Social and Environmental Research Institute (SERI) is to contribute to solving environmental problems by improving our understanding of the social factors and human behavior that cause these problems. We are primarily scholars and research social scientists, but ones with a strong commitment to making knowledge practical and useful for solving pressing problems. Much of SERI's research has been oriented to coastal and marine policy issues, including problems of nitrogen loading in estuaries, inter-governmental collaboration in marine protective area planning, fisheries regulation, oil spill planning and response, and the vulnerability of coastal communities to climate change related hazards.
- History:
SERI was founded in 1995 as an institution to enable researchers working at different universities to collaborate on interdisciplinary research projects. The Institute provides a competitive advantage for grants by having a low overhead rate (compared to universities).
