  • LIFE & Discovery is a non-profit community and education-based agency that seeks to promote Asian culture and quality of life throughout Frederick County. L&D strives to improve access to education, health, and human services in the community. We offer a network of diverse programs all geared toward helping minorities and women in Frederick County live their best life and have equal access to services and education.

  • History:
  • In 2004 Elizabeth Chung founded the “Learning Institute for Enrichment & Discovery, or LIFE & Discovery, here in Frederick, Maryland. Since its inception, her vision for LIFE & Discovery has remained the same….to improve the quality of life for the Asian community and all minority communities and women through education.

L&D is the current lead agency for the Minority Outreach and Technical Assistance Program, member of the Maryland Regional Community Partnership, H1N1 Outreach Coordinating agency with DHMH, Chinese Language Program for a number of private schools in the area, and more…

Elizabeth Chung has initiated a number of cultural programs locally to include the Lunar New Year Celebration, the Moon Festival, The Circle of 100 Women, Women & Wellness Seminars, the Asian Health Fair and a host of multi-cultural language and educational programs and camps. In addition, L&D has a history of supporting the City of Frederick by actively participating in city sponsored events like, In the Street and Pangaea, Light the Creek, and more. In 2006 Mrs. Chung taught Chinese in the local school system. Through her involvement, FCPS became the first Gifted and Talented Summer Center for the Maryland Department of Education that offered Chinese studies in both 2006 and 2007. Subsequently, FCPS also was awarded for yet another première STARTALK Summer Program for Chinese Studies, developed by Mrs. Chung. Under her leadership and the resources of L&D, many programs like this placed Frederick County on the map, both statewide and nationally.
L&D maintains an Americorp program focusing on ESOL classes, feasibility studies and citizenship classes.
