- Mission:
The Shelter's mission is leading the community to prevent, protect and prevail over domestic violence through advocacy, empowerment and social change. Our vision is a community without domestic violence, so that every home is a safe haven for the family it shelters.
The Shelter is Collier County, Florida's only state-certified domestic violence center. Since 1989, The Shelter has served over 60,600 adults and children through our emergency shelter, transitional housing and outreach programs.
- History:
The Shelter for Abused Women & Children was incorporated by a group of concerned citizens as a non-profit organization and received its 501(c)(3) designation in 1986. In 1989, the original 20 bed facility was opened to those who were homeless as a result of domestic violence. Over the years, The Shelter has grown from a 20 bed facility to a 60 bed state-of-the-art domestic violence center providing innovative programs and services to women, children and men. The Shelter has also received a 4-star rating for two consecutive years for sound fiscal management by America's premier independent charity evaluator, Charity Navigator.
