General

  • Mission:
  • The agency mission is to serve the homebound, seniors and others in Rockland County through a multipurpose agency which focuses on nutritional, recreational and social support programs.

The agency aims to provide services, regardless of ethnicity, gender, resources or ability, and to do so in such away to provide the most support possible. In particular, the agency seeks to reach those that may be especially at-risk, frail or isolated, and thus targets our outreach efforts to that vulnerable population.

Ultimately the agency strives to provide an on-going continuum of services to enhance our participants’ overall health, independence, and access to services, thereby preventing or forestalling premature institutionalization, and as a result enabling participants to remain in their own homes for as long as possible. In order to accomplish this, the agency works with a professional staff, hundreds of volunteers and many public and private groups.

  • History:
  • Meals on Wheels Programs & Services of Rockland (Meals on Wheels) has been providing “more than a meal” for more than 36 years. Originally incorporated in late 1974 as a community service by a core of local volunteers, the Agency served its first meal in January, 1975, and by the end of that year, more than 9,800 meals were delivered to the homebound. By 1997, the Agency delivered its five millionth meal. On July 7, 2009 the agency proudly delivered its eight millionth meal to Mr. Joseph Conance of West Nyack, N.Y.

In 1982 Meals on Wheels diversified to meet the ever-changing needs of Rockland’s growing senior population. The Agency expanded to support what is now five multi-purpose senior centers located across the county. Originally begun in 1983 and relocated to new, larger state-of-the art locations in 1990, the agency also proudly operates a social model Adult Day Care Center, targeted to reach the frail and cognitively impaired . Since 1983 Meals on Wheels has operated a central commissary where up to1500 meals are produced five days a week. In addition, a network of 17 vehicles transport individuals and meals to and from the senior and adult day care centers.

Since 1998, Meals on Wheels has been operating a computer learning center that offers a range of computer classes to assure that seniors are afforded the opportunities to learn and benefit from emerging technology.

In 2003, the agency purchased the 18,000 square feet of space it had been renting. In addition the agency undertook a Capital Campaign to reduce the agency’s mortgage debt and create an Endowment Fund for the future.
