ACTS started in 1969 to-day it provides: Temporary emergency shelter, clothing vouchers and financial aid; longer term housing with case management oversight; a 24 hour telephone hot-line offering problem-solving and crisis resolution; two stores that receive & sell clothing, furniture and other household items, and the only full service domestic violence intervention program in the Greater Prince William area in Northern Virginia.
Since 1969 ACTS has changed individual’s lives in Prince William County. Through the partnership and generosity of businesses, organizations, agencies and individuals working together as donors, volunteers and staff we have provided for the poorest of the poor and those that are facing personal life crises. Together we have provided temporary emergency shelter, clothing, food, utilities and opportunities for problem-solving and crisis resolution. We help build a future of hope for those in need.
We at ACTS trace our roots to 1969, when a group of church congregations joined forces to give assistance to a family burned out of their Dale City home and Prince William County’s first emergency assistance program began. With a plan of addressing the most basic human needs of food and shelter, the founders of Action in Community Through Service established the area’s first food bank, set up a used furniture distribution system and developed a homeless shelter in local churches. In 1969, Prince William had 111,000 residents; today there are over 400,000.
ACTS’ mission evolved as community needs were identified and addressed by the organization’s leadership. In 1971, the Board of Directors authorized the start-up of a Day Care Center. Near the end of the first decade of operations, the agency added professional management staff and established partnering relationships with the United Way, local governments and community service organizations. The original Emergency Assistance program was expanded by adding a homeless shelter, and a Thrift Store was opened to distribute donated goods to our clients and to raise funds for the other programs.
In 1980, Turning Points, a domestic violence intervention program, was adopted and Helpline began as a telephone crisis assistance network. At the same time, ACTS established a transitional housing program to move families from homelessness to self-sufficiency. These programs continue to serve clients numbering nearly 16,000 persons per year. Today, our Mission statement reads: “ACTS is a community organization whose mission is to alleviate hunger, homelessness and domestic violence and help people achieve self-sufficiency in the Prince William area.”
