  • Mission:
  • The Alaska Museum of Natural History is dedicated to the education and exploration of our natural and scientific world. The Museum’s exhibits, education programs and collections help bridge the gap between scientists and anyone curious about our natural world. We educate and inspire all Alaskans in the areas of paleontology, geology, archeology, zoology, ornithology, botany, and climatology through exhibits and hands on learning. We serve minority and at-risk children in primary and secondary schools throughout Alaska including the Alaskan bush communities, with applied hands-on science. We collect, conserve, research and interpret natural history materials and data and serve as a resource to the Alaskan community.

  • History:
  • Founded in 1989 and officially opened in Eagle River in 1994, the Alaska Museum of Natural History is dedicated to hands on, interactive educational programs for children and adults as well as research and exhibits illustrating our natural world. Required to vacate our Eagle River home in 2002, the Museum was able to purchase the old Midnight Sun Boat company warehouse in October, 2003 with the assistance of the Municipality of Anchorage, HUD and Community Block Grant funds.

Museum exhibit space grew from 2,000 feet to 6,000 feet and collections and education space was tripled. The Museum opened to the public June, 2004 with 1,000 square feet of exhibit space. Today, the Museum exhibits 6,000 square feet of permanent collections in small galleries. Current exhibits include the Schmidt Mine exhibit featuring geology, landforms, a stream table, gems, meteorites and interactive geology based educational activities. Other exhibits include “Alaska’s Polar Dinosaurs”, “The Dinosaur Bird Connection”, “Ice Age Mammals”, “Alaska’s Swimming Mammals”, “Bones” and our newest exhibit, “Ice”. This exhibit will be opened March 5, 2011.
