Brief Organization History
People Acting in Community Endeavors, Inc. (PACE) is the Community Action Agency serving greater New Bedford, Massachusetts. PACE began in 1982. For 29 years, we have been providing a wide variety of services to the low-income community. Our history reflects two important things. First, programs have been developed in direct response to community needs. Some have been an outgrowth of activities undertaken in response to specific events. Second, during our nearly three decades as an anti-poverty agency, PACE has enjoyed a reputation for providing effective, high quality services. The agency has two overall goals. These are to help people meet basic needs and to give our clients the tools to build self-sufficiency for themselves and their families. Each of our agency’s programs’ goals and objectives support the overall mission of the agency. PACE’s achievements have been many and varied. We are particularly proud of our work in creating affordable housing through our YouthBuild/AmeriCorps program, the creation of a dental sealant clinic in collaboration with our local vocational technical high school, and our role as a successful volunteer tax preparation site. In addition, we have many years experience in community organizing and continue to act as fiscal sponsor for many grass roots community groups. Perhaps our greatest achievement as an organization is that we have maintained a respected presence in our community by providing quality services, been effective advocates for the needs of low income people, and are seen as a “team player” with other service providers to maximize our community’s resources.
We have looked continuously at ways to improve both the quality and delivery of our services. Presently we operate programs in several areas including:
Children’s Programs – Head Start, Child Care Works providing I & R and technical assistance for providers, voucher management services, and the Family Center, which provides family literacy programs, and support services in a neighborhood setting. Our children’s programs have a long history. All of them have grown considerably over the years in response to client needs.
Energy Programs – LIHEAP and related emergency fuel programs including PACE Lifeline and Senior Energy program. The energy programs are also longstanding. In response to economic factors, Lifeline was developed about 14 years ago in order to help clients who exhausted benefits and were in heat emergencies. The Senior Energy program was developed as an emergency program targeting our most vulnerable residents.
Food Programs – Emergency Food Pantry
Housing Programs – Housing Search, Furniture Assistance Program, First Month/Security Deposit Assistance Program, and FEMA Rental/Mortgage Arrearage Assistance. PACE housing programs have changed focus several times over the past 15 years. This is in part due to changing housing needs of our clients and the great variability in resources available. However, we have always been committed to helping people find, access and maintain affordable housing.
Health Care Access – Health Access Program, lead partner in Dental Sealant Clinic. The sealant clinic program, now operational for four years, grew in response to community need. The partnership with Greater New Bedford Regional Vocational Technical High School (GNBRVTHS) to create the Dental Sealant Clinic was a major step in getting adequate health care in our community.
Education/Community Development – PACE YouthBuild providing education, construction skills training, and rehabilitating and producing affordable housing. PACE YouthBuild began in part to meet the needs of young people in our community searching for direction.
