The mission of the Achievement Centers for Children & Families is to provide a safe nurturing environment for low-income children. We meet the academic, social, emotional and physical needs of those children who need us the most while helping their families attain financial stability.
ACCF is a trusted community agency where children, families and members of the community convene for educational and recreational programs, community events and support. ACCF provides children with a safe and secure haven where they learn from positive and caring adult role models and develop the skills that will enable them to achieve academically, develop the tools and skills to successfully transition into adulthood, and ultimately make choices to become responsible and productive citizens. Teens are given a positive environment to go to during the critical out of school hours. Without the Centers, the majority of these teens would go home each day after school and be left alone and to their own devices. Adult members of the community are provided tools and resources that strengthen and empower them to move toward economic self-sufficiency while giving them a better sense of self and a richer commitment to their family and their community. ACCF takes a holistic approach by helping to meet the academic, social, emotional and physical needs of its neediest residents. The programs of ACCF address these needs and help strengthen families, improve academic achievement and provide the tools for youth to develop into productive and responsible citizens; strengthen families, and ultimately have a positive impact on the community at large.
In 1969, a group of concerned citizens responded to an overwhelming need in our community by starting a pilot program to offer affordable, quality childcare to the children of low-income working mothers. As a small private, non-profit organization, we opened our doors in donated church school rooms with a handful of teachers and children. As the needs of many families became evident, our program quickly expanded.
By 1975, we purchased a small house in the city and renovate it for educational purposes. Simultaneously our mission expanded and now encompassed providing quality, affordable childcare and preparing children for academic success.
The Centers program was so successful that the city of Delray Beach donated land and in 1990 a new preschool facility opened serving children ages 3-5 years. In 1996, a second building was added, for children ages 12 months to 3 years. The Toddler Center has become one of the top recommended locations for Palm Beach County Court appointed care for abused, neglected and abandoned children.
In 2000, the Board of Directors initiated the creation of the Community Child Care Center Foundation, which is led by community leaders with a strong background in philanthropy and formed to focus, expand and enhance the fundraising efforts for the Center. Shortly after the Foundation was up and running, the Center again expanded.
In October 2001 the Morton Downey Family Resource Center opened its doors. This center was a $4.1 million project was completed on time, paid for in advance with funds contributed from private individuals, foundations and corporations and came in $200,000 under budget. The 19,000 square foot facility provides after school care, summer care and expanded family services. The building was designed to include services for visual and performing arts, a full computer lab, library, homework assistance, a counseling room for children and families and a gymnasium. The facility also added three age-appropriate playgrounds for older children and the after school program compliments school curriculum.
In 2004, at the urging of the City of Delray Beach, we entered a competitive process and were awarded the contract for the Beacon Center at Village Academy where we offer services to families that attend that school and live in the surrounding area. Our enrollment grew from 300 children on one campus, to 700 children on two campuses; a growth rate of more than 150%. The Beacon Center was originated as a unique body of services designed to provide a partnership between a public school, a Community Based Organization, and the community surrounding the school. It symbolizes “lights on at night” and serves to draw the community into a “safe harbor.” The Beacon is housed at the Village Academy, located in a neighborhood that is targeted by the city for special services and revitalization. Our Beacon programs include an extended day program for students, a teen program, adult education courses and family resources.
We officially changed our name from the Community Child Care Center to the Achievement Centers for Children & Families (ACCF) in January, 2007.
ACCF earned the Gold Level of Agency Certification for Excellence in non-profit management/administration from the Center for Non Profit Excellence in 2006 and completed the City of Delray Beach’s Non Profit Academy that same year. In January 2008, ACCF successfully renewed its national accreditation through the National Association for the Education of Young Children (NAEYC). NAEYC is considered the most demanding and comprehensive evaluation in the industry for delivery of best practices. We have held this designation for over 15 years.
In 2011 ACCF became the first agency in Palm Beach County to renew the top level of certification under the new rigorous standard – standards that were later revised because so many agencies were unable to attain them.
