General

  • Mission:
  • The mission of the California Aquatic Therapy & Wellness Center (The Aquatic Center) is to promote wellness and improve the quality of life for individuals with health needs in an accessible, warm-water aquatic facility.

  • History:
  • The California Aquatic Therapy & Wellness Center (The Aquatic Center) is a nonprofit 501(c)(3) organization that provides aquatic therapy services to disabled children and senior citizens throughout Los Angeles and Orange counties.

Formerly known as California Pools of Hope, The Aquatic Center was founded in 1956 and incorporated in 1963 by Evelyn duPont, a dedicated civic leader, who developed polio as an adult and helped rehabilitate herself through swimming and water exercise. In an effort to help other community members benefit from aquatic therapy, Ms. duPont opened her backyard pool to disabled children and California Pools of Hope was born. The program soon outgrew Ms. duPont's pool however and, with widespread support from the community, the fledgling organization purchased a new facility in North Long Beach. Programs continued to grow, serving a broader cross section of the community including disabled adults and seniors and, in 1977, a major renovation was completed to enclose the facility allowing for year-round usage. Today the Aquatic Center is a recognized non-profit organization serving nearly 2,000 disabled children, adults and senior citizens, year-round, five-days per week.

For more than half a century, The Aquatic Center has been dedicated to helping disabled children, adults and senior citizens to achieve their highest level of physical wellness through warm water aquatic programs. The Aquatic Center’s services enable those unable to participate in land-based activities, an opportunity to engage in health promotion and disease prevention programs in a therapeutic, injury-free environment.

In 2010 the Aquatic Center reached an astounding benchmark by providing our 1 millionth aquatic therapy session.
