  • Mission:
  • The Arab Community Center for Economic and Social Services (ACCESS) is a nonprofit agency committed to advocating for and empowering individuals, families, and communities. We provide a wide range of health and human services, employment services, youth programs, educational and cultural programs, and civic engagement, advocacy, and social entrepreneurship services.
We see ACCESS as a vibrant organization that honors its Arab American heritage while serving as a nonprofit model of excellence as a social service agency. ACCESS is dedicated to community building, and is actively focused on serving those in need within the broader community, particularly newly-arrived immigrants and refugees. ACCESS strongly advocates for cultural and social entrepreneurship, and the values of community service, healthy lifestyles, education, and philanthropy.

  • History:
  • ACCESS has been deeply committed to serving and empowering the community to lead informed, productive, culturally sensitive, and fulfilling lives for over 40 years. Founded by a group of volunteers in 1971 out of a storefront in Dearborn's impoverished South End, ACCESS was created to help the Arab immigrant population adapt to life in America and has evolved into a premier organization with national and international reach.
ACCESS serves a diverse community in Dearborn and its surrounding neighborhoods through a number of projects, including social services, youth and education, employment and training, and a community health program that provides both medical and mental health services. As one of only 25 “one-stop shops” in Michigan, ACCESS is in the unique position to provide holistic support for its clients. For example, recent immigrants can seek medical services, take citizenship classes, and take advantage of job placement services all through one agency that has its clients’ best interests in mind.
During its early years, the volunteers at ACCESS saw the daily struggles many Arab immigrants in the United States faced including linguistic, cultural, and social barriers. Volunteers assisted those who struggled to navigate bureaucratic systems by providing translation services, completing tax forms, offering job and home placement support, and offering many other services.
ACCESS now maintains a number of national projects in addition to its social services core. The Arab American National Museum was conceived shortly after the tragic events on 9/11 and is the first museum in the nation dedicated solely to exhibiting and celebrating the accomplishments of Arab Americans. The National Network for Arab American Communities (NNAAC), an alliance of 22 Arab American community-based organizations, enables members to share resources and experiences to provide the best service to their communities. The Center for Arab American Philanthropy (CAAP) promotes, facilitates, and celebrates Arab American giving through education, training, and donor outreach and services. CAAP is the only program in the country harnessing the collective power of Arab American giving and knowledge to strengthen the voice of the Arab American community in American civil society. In this way ACCESS is the leader in organizing and serving the Arab American community both locally and nationally.
Today, ACCESS’s work and success continue to inspire and serve our community. With over 200 full-time employees, ACCESS has become a vital piece of both the local Dearborn community and of the national Arab American community, supporting over 90 programs that collectively serve over 75,000 clients per year.
