  • Mission:
  • LICADD’s mission is to address the addictive climate of our times by providing initial attention and referral services to individuals, families, and children, through intervention, education and professional guidance to overcome the ravages of alcohol and other drug-related problems.

Family, Individual and Workplace Chemical Dependency Interventions: professionally guided educational and motivational processes that help a family or workplace “team,” prepare themselves, approach a loved one, and talk to that person in a clear, respectful and loving way about their drug and/or alcohol use with the immediate goal of encouraging them to accept help. Family members are given the tools to care for themselves and the identified patient, if agreeable to treatment, is given the proper assistance to access competent, affordable treatment-on-demand.

Family Education and Support Series: professionally facilitated workshops designed for families who are living with someone who is actively abusing substances. This three-part series will address: the disease of alcoholism and drug addiction; the role of the family; and treatment modalities for addiction. Conducted in a supportive group setting, we encourage entire families to attend together. Completion of our series is often a first step towards conducting a planned family intervention.

Chemical Dependency Evaluations and Treatment Referral Services: provides on and off-site professional alcohol and drug related consultation, guidance and custom-tailored treatment referral services for adolescents, adults and families.

Relapse Prevention Services: provides individualized recovery coaching, case management and relapse prevention groups creating a safety-net of aftercare and support services following substance abuse treatment. LICADD’s certified relapse prevention professional staff can help recovering individuals successfully transition from inpatient treatment back home or into a sober living environment.

Prevention through Education: provides alcohol and other drug risk education for individual, family and communities from kindergarten through adulthood. Our evidence-based programs include Too Good For Drugs and Teen Intervene. Our Student Assistance Program delivers comprehensive services to educators, parents and high school students. Our educational services include adolescent evaluations, elementary and middle school interactive modules, support services for children of addicted parents and parent-child communication workshops. A broad range of problem-solving presentations can be custom designed and delivered upon demand for higher education institutions, business groups, faith-based, and community organizations.

Mentoring Services: LICADD’s BUDDY Mentoring Program delivers a wide range of support services to at-risk children of incarcerated women helping to break the multi-generational cycle of addiction and incarceration. Adult peer-to-peer mentoring services deliver a full range of transitional services to aid the successful transition and re-entry process for ex-offenders back to the community.

Criminal Justice System Alliances: implements state-of-the art diagnostic evaluations, recommendations and treatment referral services for county attorneys, criminal courts, probation services and the NYS Department of Motor Vehicles in connection with DWI or other substance disorder offenses.

Open Arms Employee and Union Assistance Services: Long Island’s oldest and most established non-profit EAP provides confidential crisis intervention services, evaluation and assessment, brief interventions, screened referrals and follow-up services for a broad spectrum of personal concerns for employees of Long Island’s companies, labor unions and school districts.

Advocacy Initiatives: work to increase awareness of, and lessen the potential impact of alcoholism and drug dependence. Through our collaborative efforts, we strive to shape public policy and practice in ways that support healthy and safe individuals, families, schools, and communities.

  • History:
  • Founded in 1955 by R. Brinkley Smithers and incorporated in 1956, LICADD was one of the first nonprofit organizations in the US, focused on addressing alcoholism, especially as it impacts families and the workplace. Over time, our mission has remaibed the same - to save lives - yet our services have evolved.
For over 56 years, LICADD has successfully delivered evidence-based programs designed to prevent and treat substance abuse and addiction. With offices in Ronkonkoma, Riverhead and Mineola, LICADD offers crisis intervention, screening, brief interventions, referrals to treatment (SBIRT), and planned family interventions to local residents struggling with addiction. Our prevention programs include the Too Good for Drugs program, parent workshops, alcohol education classes and professional trainings. Our Employee Assistance Program serves 80,000 employees and their families annually providing confidential assistance, supervisory training and critical incident stress debriefing (CISD).

For over 55 years, The Long Island Council on Alcoholism and Drug Dependence, Inc. (LICADD) a premier non-profit 501 (c) (3) organization has successfully implemented a wide range of best practice prevention and intervention programs in communities across Long Island. LICADD has built a stellar reputation as a community leader and partner to treatment providers, faith-based organizations and government agencies across the region. LICADD maintains an annual operating budget of $1,265,000 funded almost entirely by voluntary contributions, foundation and government grants and special events. Central to LICADD's mission is its unwavering policy to ensure that its vital prevention and intervention programs remain accessible to at-risk children and families.

LICADD has developed a roster of uniquely qualified and passionately dedicated professionals. The agency, under the expert direction of Executive Director, Dr. Jeffrey L. Reynolds and Clinical Director, Steven Chassman, LMSW, with our expert prevention team lead by Victoria Murphy, MSW provides a comprehensive range of best-practice alcohol and substance abuse education, prevention and intervention programs to educators, students and families throughout the Long Island community. LICADD developed one of the first Employee Assistance Programs in the country and piloted successful prevention education programs for children from elementary school though early adulthood. We continue to lead the fight to erase the stigma of the disease of addiction and have advocated strenuously and successfully to have alcoholism recognized as a disease by the AMA and for parity in health care coverage.

LICADD operates under the governance of a committed and active Board of Directors comprised of cross section of business and community leaders which reflect the cultural and economic diversity of our region.
