  • Mission:
  • Acercamiento Hispano de Carolina del Sur, also known as South Carolina
Hispanic Outreach (SCHO), is the oldest Latino community-based organization in South Carolina, and its mission is to provide access, information, and services to the Latino Community in South Carolina. SCHO has carried out diverse public health projects since its establishment, focusing on issues related to HIV/AIDS, diabetes, obesity, general health, and prenatal care/contraception initiatives. Without South Carolina Hispanic Outreach, many South Carolina Latinos would have no voice and many critical needs among the Latino population would go unmet.

  • History:
  • Acercamiento Hispano de Carolina del Sur, also known as South Carolina
Hispanic Outreach (SCHO), is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization founded in
1995 in response to the enormous growth and needs of the Latino population in South Carolina, which today has the third-fastest rate of growth in the United
States. SCHO strives to fulfill its mission of providing access, information and
services to the Latino Community by reaching out to the community, offering
advocacy and programs that respond to daily issues (health, safety, discrimination, workforce development, linguistic and cultural barriers) that affect them. Specifically, SCHO advocates for Latinos facing educational, social, economic, cultural, and health disparities in South Carolina in order to improve the quality of, and access to, the services that are already available. SCHO's long-term objective, with sufficient financial support from both public and private institutions, is to maintain the sustainability, distribution, and continuity of program offerings. While establishing itself as the premier Hispanic outreach organization, SCHO has gained extensive experience in implementing programs geared toward the needs of the Hispanic population in South Carolina. In 2003, SCHO received its first major grant from the Midlands HIV Prevention Collaboration to conduct a statewide needs assessment regarding HIV/AIDS knowledge among the Hispanic/Latino population. Today, SCHO conducts varied programs including HIV/AIDS testing and prevention education, diabetes testing and prevention education, prenatal classes, teen pregnancy prevention education, smoking cessation, and financial education and small business development.
