  • Mission:
  • The Fire & Life Safety Educators of Colorado is a network of life safety professionals committed to preventing loss, injury and death, and mitigating the context of all hazards to reduce risk in our communities collaboratively.

  • History:
  • Recognizing the need to promote fire, burn and injury prevention and education, several civic-minded individuals in our state founded the Fire Safety Educators of Colorado in 1985. Their goal was to improve public education efforts in the state, including expanding fire and life safety education throughout the year (beyond the bounds of National Fire Prevention Week in October). They believed a coalition of educators would be stronger than individuals working independently. The coalition also could empower individuals with professional development opportunities otherwise out of reach. Thus in establishing the Fire Safety Educators of Colorado they provided for the parts and the whole simultaneously.
FSEC expanded and contracted throughout the 1980s and 1990s into different parts of the state. In the 1990s, FSEC established a professional development conference: the Colorado Safety and Prevention Conference. It also partnered with the Denver Post to publish a fire prevention insert as part of the Newspapers in Education program that accompanied all copies of the Post during Fire Prevention Week.
An influx of new members from around the state and from rural, suburban and urban agencies reinvigorated FSEC in the mid-2000s. In 2008 we changed our name to the Fire & Life Safety Educators of Colorado (FLSEC) to recognize the injury and illness prevention and emergency preparedness efforts of its members and the industry. We had evolved to become fire and life safety educators. We updated our by-laws to reflect that mission more effectively and added a fifth director to its executive board to reflect its growing roster and encourage better geographic representation among the formal leadership. One year later, we updated FLSEC’s discrimination policy to read, “This Corporation does not discriminate on the basis of religion, race, color, gender, gender expression, national origin, sexual orientation, or age in membership or provision of services.” Now into its 26th year, FLSEC and its members, who represent a multitude of agencies and interests throughout Colorado and Wyoming, pursue all-hazards community risk reduction.
