  • Mission:
  • The Hepatitis B Foundation is a national nonprofit organization dedicated to finding a cure and improving the quality of life for those affected by hepatitis B worldwide. Our commitment includes funding
focused research, promoting disease awareness, supporting immunization and treatment initiatives and serving as the primary source of information for patients and their families, the medical and scientific community and the general public.

  • History:
  • The Hepatitis B Foundation (HBF) is a national nonprofit organization dedicated to finding a cure and improving the lives of those affected by hepatitis B worldwide through research, education and patient advocacy. Scientific excellence rooted in human compassion characterizes the creation and growth of the Foundation. The HBF was started in 1991 by two couples and Dr. Baruch Blumberg, recipient of the Nobel Prize for his discovery of the hepatitis B virus and the first hepatitis B vaccine. They were deeply moved by the plight of a young family affected by hepatitis B and decided to establish an organization focused on this serious liver disease. Having celebrated the 20th anniversary in 2011, the Foundation has grown from a kitchen grassroots effort into a professional organization with a global reach.
Currently, the HBF is one of the nation’s leading authorities on hepatitis B. This has been a year of outstanding accomplishments in the HBF’s research institute, the Institute for Hepatitis and Virus Research (IHVR), in which our lead diagnostics have moved closer to human use, and our basic science discoveries have led to new strategies for intervention.
Additionally, our outreach program directly touches millions of people each year through its comprehensive website at www.hepb.org, which receives almost one million visitors each year, annual patient conference, and multi-lingual information services. The HBF public health program, Gateway to Care program, works on creating research-based initiatives that address the unmet needs of assessing the disease burden of chronic HBV, closing the gap between screening and referral to care, and promoting liver cancer education. Some of the work of our advocacy program include the successful launch of the groundbreaking Hepatitis B Bill in Congress, National Hepatitis Awareness Month, and World Hepatitis Day.
