  • Mission:
  • Allies with Families mission statement is Empowering Families of children with behavioral, mental or emotional health needs with Voice, Access, and Ownership through Education, Training, and Advocacy.

Allies with Families believes educated parents and caregivers make better choices for their child. The goal of Allies with Families' programs are to empower parents and caregivers with Voice to utilize their tools and strategies to advocate for their child in areas such as school, home and the mental health system. As parents learn how to advocate for their child, the entire family is benefited. Children and youth stay engaged in school and families are better prepared to identify and achieve their goals. Through the example of the parent or caregiver the youth find their own Voice to learn how to advocate for themselves in the future.

As a member of the community of child and family serving agencies, Allies with Families seeks for positive change in programs and policies that affect children with behavioral, mental or emotional health needs and their families. Collaborating with organizations and individuals in their communities throughout Utah provides the support, tools, and resources families need to care for their children.

As families take Ownership of their role as mentor and caregiver in their children's lives children's treatment and school plans better reflect the needs of the individual child with behavioral, mental or emotional health needs. This then provides the whole family with Access to the array of services and supports in their community.

Allies with Families believes that working together to make things better for children with behavioral, mental or emotional health needs benefits communities for now and in the future.

  • History:
  • Allies with Families began as a project of Utah's Parent Technical Center in 1991 with a small grant from the Division of Mental Health and the State Office of Education. Allies with Families' mandate is to provide information and support to families of children with behavioral, mental or emotional health needs.

Allies was awarded a Statewide Family Network Grant in 1993, allowing the organization to expand the focus of work to include mental health systems change policy. This grant has continued through a competitive process to the present time. In 1998, Allies with Families separated from the Utah Parent Technical Center and obtained its 501(c)(3) status.

Allies with Families is a family controlled non-profit organization. At least 51% of the Board of Directors is a parent of a child or children with behavioral, mental or emotional health needs under the age of 18. Allies with Families gives preference to family members of children with behavioral, mental or emotional health needs in hiring.

Allies with Families programs serve individuals(including parents, caregivers, children with behavioral, mental or emotional health needs, professionals/paraprofessionals, educators, community members, faith-based leaders and siblings of children with behavioral, mental or emotional health needs) statewide. Allies with Families participates and/or chairs many state-level committees that can affect positive policy changes statewide. Allies with Families receives referrals from state and local level child and family serving agencies to mediate when issues cannot be resolved regarding children with behavioral, mental or emotional health needs. Allies with Families staff provides training and consultation to various state agencies and the community on issues such as parent/professional collaboration, family health and wellness, navigating the school and mental health system and children's case management.
