ADA's mission is to ensure children with disabilities get the adaptive equipment they need to achieve their full potential. We do this by engaging families, schools, and communities in the process of creating customized adaptations and promoting the establishment of Adaptive Design Centers.
ADA envisions a day when Adaptive Design Services are commonplace, fully integrated, and accessible to all children and adults with disabilities.
1. To challenge assumptions about "disability” and raise expectations about human capacities.
2. To generate awareness that the vast majority of children with disabilities need more adaptations than they currently receive.
3. To help teachers, therapists, and parents transform ideas into requests for child-specific adaptations through hands-on learning.
4. To contribute to skills training and job creation for US Veterans, the transitional workforce, and the unemployed.
5. To demonstrate that Adaptive Design Services are crucial, cost-effective, and fun.
6. To encourage the establishment of Adaptive Design Centers regionally, nationally, and internationally.
7. To motivate local communities to volunteer their time and talents, donate tools and materials, and make financial contributions.
8. To advance the practical application of science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM subjects).
9. To provide Service Learning opportunities for high school, college, and graduate students.
10. To collaborate with colleges and universities to develop Adaptive Design Studies and degree programs for educators, clinicians, designers, and other related professions.
We serve children of all ethnicities and income levels, aged birth to 12 years, from all five New York City boroughs.
It is important to start as early as possible to foster independence and self-esteem in any child. It is absolutely critical that children with special needs (aged 6 to 12) get the opportunity to learn how to function successfully and independently, so they can make the most of their elementary education. Only then will they be able to live meaningful, self-reliant lives as teenagers and adults. Only then can they become their own advocates and decision-makers. Adaptive Design’s custom-made adaptations allow children to sit correctly and comfortably, to enjoy their sensory experiences, to make their needs and wishes known, and to do whatever they choose to do as independently as possible.
As an essential part of its mission, Adaptive Design offers hands-on courses in adaptive design to therapists, teachers, family members, and volunteers. We promote public awareness and involvement through education and outreach activities; and we seek to replicate our workshop and training center in other boroughs of New York City, across the nation, and around the world.
The Adaptive Design Association was started as a pilot project in September 1998 by two women—Alex Truesdell and Antoinette LaSorsa—and was incorporated as an independent 501(c) (3) nonprofit organization in April 2001
We envision a day when customized equipment is being produced quickly, affordably, and locally because adaptive-design services are widely recognized as an indispensable resource for children and all people with disabilities.
