ALIVE! Inc's mission is: With faith and love, to help people faced with emergency situations or long-term needs become capable of assuming self-reliant roles in the community.
ALIVE! Inc (ALexandrians InVolved Ecumenically) is a 501(c)3 nonprofit organization involving 42 religious congregations partnering with the business community and residents at large to help those in need in Alexandria, Virginia. ALIVE! serves thousands of Alexandrians annually with shelter; low-cost early childhood education and childcare; financial help for rent, utilities, medical care and other critical needs; emergency food; and deliveries of donated furniture and housewares. With minimal public financial support, ALIVE! relies on foundations, faith communities, businesses, community groups, and individuals for financial, in-kind, organizational, and volunteer support.
In March 2012 the ALIVE! Board of Directors approved a five-year strategic plan. This plan establishes measurable goals, objectives and strategies for each of its key programs. The overarching two goals guiding strategies and activities are: 1) To meet the emergency needs of Alexandrians in financial distress; and 2) To work with lower-income Alexandrians seeking to lead self-sufficient and productive lives.
Current Activities, Recent Accomplishments and Future Plans: ALIVE! operates emergency assistance programs, furniture and household goods programs, a homeless shelter/transitional housing program, and a high-quality, low-cost early childhood education center. With 13 full-time staff (10 in the CDC) and 2 part-time employees, operations are supplemented by volunteers working in numerous roles in every program. Volunteers entirely staff and manage four ALIVE! programs, holding administrative costs to less than 10% of the budget.
Current activities, FY11-12 accomplishments, and future plans include:
•Family Emergency Program: ALIVE! provides emergency financial assistance to households in need, responding to over 2,000 requests annually from citywide referral sources for financial assistance to pay rent, utilities, and other emergency expenses. This year ALIVE! provided $259,518 in emergency help to 1,683 households.
•Emergency Food Programs: ALIVE! operates two emergency food programs to low-income families. This year ALIVE! provided a three-day supply of food (nearly 4,000 bags valued at $60,870) 982 times, serving 2,440 people through our weekly program, and provided 6,887 households a 5-day supply through our monthly program, helping 23,491 people.
•Shelter Program: ALIVE! House is a transitional housing program that provides 6-24 months of housing and supportive services for homeless women and families in emergency situations, helping residents set and achieve goals in areas including decision-making, independent living skills, parenting skills, education/career development, financial management, and safe and affordable permanent housing. This year ALIVE! House served 7 households.
•Furniture and Household Goods Program: Many low-income people, especially if they have been homeless, lack basic furniture and other necessities. Volunteers pick up furniture from donors and deliver donations, along with “starter kits” of household goods. ALIVE! collected and delivered donated furniture valued at $103,000 to 301 needy families; donated housewares valued at approximately $10,000 were distributed to approximately 2,000 households.
•Child Development Center (CDC): The CDC provided full-day early care and education services for 38 two-five year olds and services to their families. Most students receive public and/or private childcare tuition support, through local, state or federal subsidies, and/or ALIVE! scholarships. The children are “at-risk”, with challenges including developmental delays, backgrounds of abuse, and English as a second language. The CDC is accredited by the National Association for the Education of Young Children, and received a four-star rating through a state partnership to distinguish quality, ranking in the top 2% of Virginia’s 295 participating programs.
Founded in 1969 by people from several Alexandria, Virginia congregations inspired by the 1968 Poor People’s March on Washington to put “faith and love into action”, ALIVE! is the largest private safety net for the poor in the City of Alexandria, addressing short-term to long-term needs for those less fortunate.
