Alachua Habitat for Humanity (AHFH) brings people together to build homes, communities and hope. AHFH has adopted the Neighborhood Revitalization Initiative (NRI) which is a program that is a community collaboration for neighborhood revitalization. This includes Critical Home Repair for residents.
Habitat's mission has long been to bring people together to build communities and hope through new home construction., In the past three years Habitat's mission has undergone a paradigm shift. Whereas in the past Habitat only built new homes, now through the Neighborhood Revitalization Initiative (NRI) we are seeking to impact more families, and utilize our many volunteers by adding additional products to our services to better meet the needs and serve communities with their housing and homeowner needs. AHFH is leading Neighborhood Revitalization in Alachua County by bringing community organizations together to work in partnership to transform a community. This program includes not only housing development and home rehab but addresses safety issues, education, economic development and health concerns. We are mapping the community assets to help develop a plan that can be expanded and then replicated again and again in neighborhoods in our community. We are in the early stages of the collaboration (4 months) - we have selected a neighborhood, and we have more than 10 agencies working together in partnership. We have developed and administered a resident survey and now we are moving toward the most important part of the process which is the resident engagement through a series of planned community forum meetings. We know that in order to transform a community we must engage and work hand in hand with the local residents. The goals of the NRI Program are to serve more families through an expanded array of housing products, to demonstrate an improved quality of life for the families in the communities we serve, to broaden the base of Habitat's financial support and to increase and utilize the wealth of volunteers who participate in community and neighborhood revitalization. A large part of this effort will be not only in creating the plan but each partner developing and bringing resources to the effort. With that in mind, we ask for your support with this Neighborhood Revitalization Initiative effort. We believe we are developing the blueprint for the future of success of Neighborhood Revitalization.
Alachua Habitat for Humanity has built 113 homes in the county since 1986. These homes were built thought fundraising and local volunteer support. In the past two years we have added Critical Home Repair to our array of services as well as a program called A Brush with Kindness - which is an exterior repair/paint program.
Our strategic plans calls for us to build and/or rehab a minimum of four new homes in each of the next 3 years. We are also working on several home rehabs and just completed 2 Brush with Kindness Projects as part of the Sept 11th Day of Service and Remembrance. We have 6 managerial staff members including the ED and 10 staff in the Thrift Store so you can see - we truly utilize the power of volunteers and many hands. Utilizing volunteers is what keeps our projects low cost and affordable.
