General

  • Mission:
  • The Friends of Wilmington Parks mission is the sensitive restoration of parkland and historic structures and the support of educational, recreational and cultural programs for the public.

  • Overview:
  • Founded in 1991, the Friends of Wilmington Parks began as a grass-roots organization of supporters who aspired to restore Brandywine Park to its original splendor. Working with the Delaware Division of Parks & Recreation and the City of Wilmington, the Friends of Wilmington Parks were then and are now committed to the preservation and maintenance of the expanded Wilmington State Parks system, a cluster of parks in the heart of the state’s principal city. A forested retreat within the commercial headquarters of some of the nation’s largest corporations, the Wilmington State Parks-Brandywine, Rockford and Fletcher Brown- are linked together by trails along the Brandywine River, and are the site of late 19th Century monuments, formal Victorian gardens and Delaware’s only Zoo.

  • History:
  • The Friends of Wilmington Parks is dedicated to the revitalization of Wilmington’s urban parks, and have successfully created partnership paradigms with state and local park agencies to fundraise for affordable and accessible educational, recreational and cultural programs. The 500 member- supported organization has gained prestige in the nonprofit sector as an ethical and accountable association, with established governance policies and procedures administered by its voluntary Board of Directors.
The Friends of Wilmington Parks has the capacity for outreach beyond the Wilmington community, and provides a unique and valuable service to the statewide parks community of collaborators, donors, patrons and members of the organization. Working in concert with other Friends organizations in all three counties to ensure the stewardship of the ecological, historical and cultural heritage of 26,000 acres of preserved state parkland, the Friends of Wilmington Parks exemplify the principle and spirit of volunteerism.
The Friends of Wilmington Parks’ advocacy activities include an annual stipend for Title I elementary schoolchildren in the Wilmington community to attend environmental education programs delivered by the parks’ naturalists. Additional accomplishments the Friends of Wilmington Parks have achieved are the rebirth of the annual Brandywine Festival of the Arts; the renovation and maintenance of the nationally recognized Jasper Crane Rose Garden and the recreation of an historic Pavilion Overlook in Brandywine Park.
