Africa Bridge is dedicated to empowering East African communities to improve the lives of orphaned and vulnerable children. Our goal is to strengthen children, families and communities with provision of skills, education and resources to protect the future of Africa - the children.
Africa Bridge (AB) was founded in 2000 by Barry Childs, a retired businessman raised in Tanzania. Responding to the beauty of the people and country versus the devastation of HIV/AIDS and poverty, Childs began Africa Bridge. With input from all sectors of the community, including children, AB has developed self-sustaining projects that are replicable and deliver significant, lasting returns on modest financial investments. Our goal is to meet children's needs through a variety of well thought-out programs that have community-wide support. Programs include scholarship assistance, establishment of income generating micro loan cooperatives for families already fostering children, HIV/AIDS peer counselor training, setting up Most Vulnerable Children Committees, school construction/repair assistance, and introducing tree nurseries to support the environment. What makes our projects unique are the significant education and mentoring components included, in addition to the requirement that all programs include at least 50% women participants. To date AB's work has concentrated in the eight villages of the Isongole Ward - Rungwe District in SW Tanzania. We are expanding into neighboring Masoko Ward in 2008.
