AIDS Alabama devotes its energy statewide to helping people with HIV/AIDS live healthy, independent lives and works to prevent the spread of HIV.
AIDS Alabama was incorporated in 1986 with a mission to serve persons with HIV and to provide education and outreach to prevent the spread of HIV. In 1988, AIDS Alabama performed a needs assessment funded by the Health Resources Services Administration (U.S. Department of Health & Human Services), and found that housing was the number one need for persons living with HIV/AIDS in the greater Birmingham area. AIDS Alabama began to develop strong relationships with homeless, healthcare, business, and government entities. In September of 1993, AIDS Alabama's first housing property opened to provide transitional housing to persons living with HIV/AIDS. Over the next ten years, AIDS Alabama received multiple grants from the U.S. Department of Housing & Urban Development, which allowed the organization to greatly expand housing capabilities. Today AIDS Alabama operates ten housing programs (permanent and transitional), and provides over 76,000 nights of safe and affordable housing to low-income persons with HIV/AIDS each year.
