General

  • Mission:
  • To create and maintain facilities and programs, including an acute care psychiatric hospital to serve the needs of the mentally ill, emotionally disturbed, and maladjusted persons, requiring inpatient, outpatient and rehabilitation services, treatment and care, regardless of race, creed, national origin or sex, including persons referred to or placed in such facilities or programs by courts or other public agencies.

  • History:
  • Gateways Hospital and Mental Health Center is a non-profit organization providing acute in-patient, residential and out-patient services to mentally ill adolescents and adults. It was founded with the belief that those with little or no resources should have access to the same high quality services available as those with the ability to pay.

Gateways was a pioneer in the provision of community-based services to the mentally ill, opening its first 10-bed facility in 1953. A new campus, nestled in park-like surroundings not far from Dodger Stadium, was opened in 1961 and dedicated by Eleanor Roosevelt. Over the ensuing years, Gateways has developed a variety of services and programs to assist some of society's most challenged individuals and their families. We offer programming to aid the homeless mentally ill, those with co-occurring disorders (e.g., substance addiction and mental illness), the mentally ill and at-risk teens and the mentally ill exiting the criminal justice system.

Gateways’ operations are delivered on four separate campuses. The main campus houses a 55-bed acute psychiatric hospital serving adults and adolescents, a child and adolescent out-patient program and a 72-bed adult residential center. Two other sites provide residential service programs to the chronic mentally ill population. Gateways Homeless Services was started in 2002 to assist adults with mental illness who are homeless or at risk of homelessness. The services offered are emergency shelter placement, case management, mental health services, life support, community outreach, and medication support.

Our goal is to help clients achieve their maximum level of independence in the community through ongoing support services. We serve approximately 1,000 clients annually with average ongoing monthly caseloads of over 100 clients.

We are members of the Healthcare Association of Southern California, the California Healthcare Association and the Association of Community Human Services Agencies. We are fully accredited by the Joint Commission on Accreditation of Healthcare Organizations.
