To enhance the potential of the students of the Oak Park School District’s success in higher education and the workplace.

• History:

Established in 1993, OPBEA is a continuation of a successful pilot program initiated by Consumers Energy. It is part of the district’s improvement plan, which has been recognized as a model for urban schools who serve primarily African American and immigrant student populations.

As the student and family population of urban public schools becomes more ethnically and economically diverse, teachers and the future employers of students are faced with new challenges. The Oak Park Business and Education Alliance (OPBEA) is a nonprofit organization that helps schools graduate students for tomorrow’s workforce. OPBEA provides a way for the community to collaborate with the Oak Park School District to help students acquire the knowledge and skills needed to succeed in life.

Nearly half the students OPBEA serves are at or below the poverty level. Approximately 84% of current students are African American, 13% are Caucasian and 3% are Hispanic or Asian. Seventy percent of the Caucasian population comes from Chaldean or Arabic-speaking households. The Oak Park School District is located on the northern boundary of Detroit and encompasses the City of Oak Park along with portions of Royal Oak Township and Southfield.
