- Mission:
The Environmental Law & Policy Center (ELPC) is the Midwest’s leading public interest environmental legal advocacy and eco-business innovation organization. We develop and lead successful strategic environmental advocacy campaigns to protect our natural resources and improve environmental quality. We are public interest environmental entrepreneurs who engage in creative business dealmaking with diverse interests to put into practice our belief that environmental progress and economic development can be achieved together. ELPC’s multidisciplinary staff of talented and experienced public interest attorneys, environmental business specialists, public policy advocates, and communications specialists brings a strong and effective combination of skills to solve environmental problems.
ELPC’s vision embraces both smart, persuasive advocacy and sustainable development principles to win the most important environmental cases and create positive solutions to protect the environment. We say “yes” to better solutions; we don’t just say “no.” ELPC has achieved a strong track record of successes on national and regional clean energy development and pollution reduction, transportation and land use reform, and natural resources protection issues. ELPC brings a new form of creative public advocacy that effectively links environmental progress and economic development and improves the quality of life in our Midwestern communities.
- History:
ELPC was founded in 1993 with the support of seven foundations following a strategic planning process centered on the need and potentially powerful impacts that could be achieved by a regional public interest environmental law and policy advocacy organization in the Midwest. ELPC meets the need for: (1) public interest legal, economic and technical resources devoted to the most important environmental and natural resources issues; and (2) a strategic regional perspective as environmental issues are increasingly regional in scope, complex, and require coordinated strategies to shape public policy. ELPC provides key regional leadership in shaping sustainable environmental development policy innovations.
ELPC has grown from a start-up in 1993 with an annaul budget of $850,000 to the Midwest's leading public interest environmental legal advocacy and eco-business innovation organization with an annual budget of $4.5 million. ELPC has a strong and talented multidisciplinary staff and has achieved a track record of successes on strategically-focused national and regional clean energy development and pollution reduction, transportation and land use reform, and natural resources protection issues.
