General

  • Mission:
  • The mission of Allison Woods Outdoor Learning Center is to promote education through the use of land and water as an outdoor classroom by offering a curriculum based upon science, technology, engineering and mathematics, (STEM). It is our hope that students who attend Allison Woods Outdoor Learning Center will develop a sense of their place in the environment and become good stewards of the community around them.

  • Overview:
  • In Iredell County alone there are approximately 39,000 students of which 43% receive free or reduced lunches and most of these students will not have the chance to experience an outdoor learning opportunity. It is the goal of Allison Woods Outdoor Learning Center to reach students that, due to location and/or economics lack the opportunity to experience research and learning in aquatic settings. By presenting a new opportunity to pique student's interest, we broaden the pool of potential scientists and engineers for the future by presenting exposure to activities in this setting. As educational systems look to increase science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) performance in students and encourage careers in these fields, an opportunity to expose them to a new experience connected with these activities is a valuable resource in reaching that goal.

  • History:
  • First opening its doors in 1992, Allison Woods Outdoor Learning Center was conceived to encourage hands-on learning about the environment using the surrounding 1000 acres with immediately accessible lakes, streams, forest, trails, plant and animal life.

Our school programs are designed for ages 6 and up and can be scheduled year round. Most programs are site-based and hands-on using experiential learning to help students make a personal connection with the environment. Programs can be designed to fit certain courses of study with many that are transportable into the classroom for students that have disabilities.

Educational programming at Allison Woods Outdoor Learning Center goes beyond curricula normally associated with a nature center. Workshops designed to deepen educator content knowledge that offer Continuing Education Units are scheduled year round. The Lake Portal Nature Camp, a week-long science camp is offered for children that want a more intensive science opportunity. In the past, field trip opportunities have allowed us to admit over 2000 students and educators annually from North Carolina free of charge.
