211 LA County is dedicated to providing an easy-to-use, caring, professional source of guidance, advocacy and 24/7 access to a comprehensive array of human services through information and referral (I&R) call handling to the people of LA County.
211 LA County is a 501(c) 3 nonprofit organization operated primarily through fee-for-service contracts and public sector grants. 211 LA County is a dba of the Information and Referral Federation of Los Angeles County that was created in 1981 through a joint effort of the County of Los Angeles and the United Way of Greater Los Angeles. The agency's mission is to provide easy-to-use, caring, professional guidance, advocacy, and 24/access to a comprehensive array of human services.
211 LA County functions as a gateway to the County's vast and complex social service delivery system. We link all Los Angeles County residents to services that strengthen families and improve their economic success; equips them to prepare their children for school; helps them find and keep jobs with opportunities for advancement; helps them identify and gain access to public benefits and subsidies; and increases their access to quality health care. Professional community resource advisers help callers with critical issues such as health care and substance abuse, domestic violence, shelter, food, legal and financial assistance, programs for children and seniors and different types of mental health services.
211 LA serves the entire LA County region. As of the 2012 U.S. Census, LA County has a population of 9,963,000 making it the most populous county in the United States. The county seat is the city of Los Angeles, the largest city in California and the second-largest city in the United States. The county is home to over a quarter of all California residents and is one of the most ethnically diverse counties in the country. The county is 4,752 sq. miles and includes 88 incorporated cities and many unincorporated areas. LA County is more populous than 42 individual U.S. states.
Since 1981, 211 LA has successfully provided free, confidential I&R services in English, Spanish, TTY, and more than 140 additional languages. 211 LA is the largest I&R service in the nation, helping approximately 500,000 individuals and families in LA County each year, and is recognized nationally, throughout the state, and in Canada for its leadership in the field. 211 LA currently employs 85 Community Resource Advisors (CRAs) for daily call handling. Annual calls in 2013 were 420,000. Individuals who contact 211 LA are from our County’s most disadvantaged population groups who are most in need of access to I&R.
As part of our multi-service approach, 211 LA maintains a comprehensive database of approximately 5,000 human service agencies containing information on more than 49,000 different programs and is continually updated by a full-time team of professional resource writers. Using the data we collect on caller demographics, and call-related service problems, 211 LA generates a comprehensive overview of the critical issues facing individuals and families who live in Los Angeles County and utilizes that data to assure the consistent delivery of relevant and timely information.
