• Mission:

The Global Development and Environment Institute (GDAE) is a research institute at Tufts University dedicated to promoting a better understanding of how societies can pursue their economic goals in an environmentally and socially sustainable manner.

The goal of the Research and Policy Program is to deepen public understanding and influence public debate over environmental and development problems and policies. While contemporary intellectual fashion too often treats market incentives as a panacea for environmental problems and international development, GDAE sees a legitimate but limited role for these policies, alongside diverse other approaches. Complementing GDAE's educational and theoretical efforts, the program's main goals are to identify the appropriate role for market-based instruments and develop alternative proposals that make use of a wider range of policy measures.

• History:

GDAE was formed in 1993, combining the research agendas and programs of its two co-directors, economist Neva Goodwin and scientist/policy analyst William Moomaw. It has been part of Tufts University since its inception. In 2001 it expanded into two program areas, a Theory and Education program directed by Jonathan Harris, and a Research and Policy program directed by Frank Ackerman.
