- Mission:
Texas A&M International University, a member of the Texas A&M University System, serves as the intellectual center of a vibrant bilingual and multicultural community. Our mission is to prepare students for leadership roles in their chosen profession and in an increasingly complex, culturally diverse state, national and global society. The University provides students with a learning environment anchored by the highest quality programs built on solid academic foundations. We consist of the College of Arts and Sciences, the College of Business, the College of Education, the College of Nursing and Health Sciences, and a NCAA Division II Athletics program. To fulfill our mission, the University offers baccalaureate, masters and Ph.D. programs.
- History:
The University originally began as a “center” in August of 1970 under Texas A&I University in Kingsville. The focus was to fill a demand in teacher education and business disciplines. It was organized under the upper-level concept of higher education to offer bachelors, and eventually graduate degrees. The name was changed in 1977 to Laredo State University and to Texas A&M International University in 1993. The 74th Texas Legislature authorized the expansion of a four year undergraduate program status for the Fall of 1995, along with the eventual authorization for doctoral programs. The Fall of 1995 inaugurated not only the first offering of freshman and sophomore courses, but a newly constructed campus.
Our University has seen enrollment growth of approximately 10% every academic semester. Enrollment for 2006-2007 school year was 4,922 students, of which 89.27% are Hispanics, 79.30% undergraduates, 43.81% are low-income, and 50.21% first generation college students (TAMIU Office of Institutional Effectiveness). Since the 1999-2000 school year, approximately 71.33% of TAMIU’s baccalaureate graduates have been first generation college students. The 2005-2006 school year saw 617 students graduate, with 74% of them as first generation.
