1625 Independent People (1625ip) exists to help young people to reboot their lives.
We actively prevent youth homelessness and promote a planned approach to independent living. By meeting young people’s needs, every young person achieves a positive outcome as a result of contacting us.
In order to make sure we understand young people's needs we include them at every level of the organisation.
1625ip works with 16-25 year olds in the South West of England, who are at risk of or already facing homelessness. Our service ranges from simple signposting or advice to intensive one-to-one support for up to two years. We can either house and support someone, or support them in their own property. We work with over 1300 young people every year.
The mainstay of our work is initially helping young people with the practicalities of living independently - dealing with the bills, maintaining a tenancy, looking after their health - both body and mind, cooking, cleaning and finding meaningful positive activities.
We also have in-house mental health workers to help young people overcome the confidence-shattering experience of homelessness itself.
Much of our work is in prevention of homelessness, helping people become confident - not only in themselves but in their ability to deal with everyday challenges.
Many of the young people we work with are only 16-18 and are ill-prepared to live alone. Over 35% are care-leavers.
The one thing that makes all this possible is that the young people trust us. We have been exclusively working with 16-25 year olds for 30 years. We know our stuff. Young people in this age group have very specific needs. It's a time of transitions - child to adult, dependent to living alone, for some becoming parents, and others unfortunately leaving juvenile detention and moving to adult prison. We understand those transitions better than most.
1625ip operates within the framework of a Psychologically Informed Environment - which means all staff regardless of their role are trained to understand the effects and manifestations of trauma.
As well as 75 properties in the community, housing over 190 young people (mostly shared houses) we also run two live-in supported housing units in Bristol offering 76 emergency bed spaces to 16-21 years olds.
1625 Independent People is a merger of Priority Youth Housing and Wayahead Housing and Support for Young People. Wayahead was established in 1982 (then known as East Bristol Youth Housing) and Priority in 1989 (then known as South Bristol Youth Housing). Both organisations were born out of the need for specialist support for 16 - 25 year olds. We are now leaders in the field of supporting young homeless people in Bristol and the South West.
Over the last ten years we have shifted our emphasis from just being housing providers to being a young person development agency. We have recognised the unique position we are in - in that the young people we work with trust us. This gives us an opportunity to provide support which is more likely to be accepted than any other agency.
We are a voluntary, not for profit, tax-exempt organisation, regulated by the FSA and Charity Commission exempt. We make a measurable difference and help to shape service services in the communities we work in.
