  • Mission:
  • To serve youth in our community who are identified as potential school dropouts. We provide low-barrier drop out prevention activities where members learn from one another, discover new possibilities for their lives and use their individual and collective creativity to explore positive change.

  • Overview:
  • We address the challenge of retaining a low-barrier model while maintaining expectations of members and setting limits, yet we remain flexible. We we provide challenging activities while accepting participant limitations. We work closely with school staff, but retain our separation as an independent program. Every member is encouraged to expect the best of himself. activities include exploring the environment in the Sac0/Ossipee River Valley, hiking the surrounding mountains, providing community service, visiting local businesses and farms, visiting historical sites and museums, learning from registered guides and snow tubing, ropes courses and mountain biking--to name a few. In doing so, we provide a since of belonging to youth who have been marginalized, we help them build self confidence, we increase their physical activity, help them develop social skills, increase their a precaution of the environment and maintain a connection with their community.

  • History:
  • Now in its 5th year, this successful program has the support of the administration of MSAD#55 and, before we achieved our tax exempt status, the District acted as grant recipient for us. Our first year was, in fact, partially funded by MSAD#55 with substance abuse money. founder and now executive director, Charlene Barton is a Licensed Substance Abuse Counselor and Social Worker in private practice in this underserved and rural area of Maine. She has donated her time and space, as well as vehicles, to make this program the success it has become. As she has lived in the area for 40 years, raised 5 children here, taught in the schools and, in the past, worked with addicted youth, homeless youth and teen parents, she has much experience and passion to bring to this program.
