To provide families with a non-traditional community-based education, where each member is given the opportunity to grow and achieve, through the most innovative learning methods and tools.
Through education and community building, our vision is for families to build a sustainable future, free from dependency on others for basic needs.
Families will have a real chance to break the cycle of poverty and create a new reality where they have choices and are empowered to choose their own path.
A Heart for Guatemala was founded in November 2011 by William and Bethany Widby. Bethany has held a true love for Guatemala for over 10 years and is an educator at heart, having earned her M.Ed in Elementary Education and traveled extensively around the world. She has taught in both private schools, as well as inner-city public schools.
Early on in her travels throughout Guatemala, Bethany recognized the educational challenges faced by indigenous children and families in Guatemala and was determined to give each child and adult the opportunity for an education. She knew that education needed to be a whole-family commitment, in order for children to be successful. She was troubled with the high rate of illiteracy among indigenous adults and knew that increasing literacy would build self-esteem and family stability.
In the summer of 2012, Bethany and her son spent 3 months in Guatemala. During that time, she established partnerships with NGOs in the Lake Atitlan area, trained teachers in new teaching methods and curriculum, established relationships with families and teachers in 7 communities, and hosted 28 volunteers over a two week period.
Leading up to summer, A Heart for Guatemala volunteers created over 100 hands-on Montessori lessons that were introduced to over 300 children across 7 preschools. In 2012 Bethany and her team had secured sponsors for 60 students K-University and created a system to track each student's progress and family welfare.
Summer 2013 proved to be very successful when 5 volunteer groups headed to Guatemala for a week each. A specific trip was created for educators which will focus on the exchange of best practices and teaching methods between American and Guatemalan teachers. Summer 2013 an education and empowerment program was started for women. 15 women aged 18-70 attended the first year. It was extremely successful and in 2014 we expanded to include 50 women in the program. In 2015 we hope to be able to teach over 100.
