Background

ACTS Community Development is dedicated to fighting hunger and poverty in our community by providing emergency food, shelter, education, and guidance to help move families toward self-sufficiency. We serve the Coney Island area, a neighborhood with very high rates of poverty, hunger, disability, and unemployment, through the Lighthouse Mission opened here in 2004. In addition, we have provided shelter and assistance to pregnant and abused young women at Rachel's Joy Maternity Home in Flatbush for nearly 20 years. We are committed to expanding all our programs in order to reach even more of those in need.
2003
ACTS was founded in 2003 by Revs. Vincent Fusco and Susan Mirti-Fusco and others involved with the New Jerusalem City Church in Brooklyn with decades of experience performing community outreach. In 2004, ACTS obtained and renovated a building on Mermaid Avenue in Coney Island, where the Lighthouse Mission was founded. ACTS was created to unite this program with Rachel's Joy Maternity Home, started in 1989, the Mother and Baby Wellness Center, and other programs serving the community. Since then the Lighthouse Mission has expanded its food program from 350 families served to more than 1,600 and added additional days of distribution. In 2007 we started an after-school program for children aged 5-13 and hired additional staff to receive clients 5 days a week. We recently began offering public benefits screening with a professional social worker and adopted a shared software database system through our neighborhood coalition of emergency service providers.
