  • Mission:
  • 1to1Movement exists to inspire and simplify sustainability in daily life. We’re helping each person find their own way to save the world.

    We do this through:

Education — introductory workshops and programs for people who are just starting to adopt a sustainable lifestyle.

Engagement — hands-on initiatives that support people in taking sustainability to the next level.

  • Overview:
  • 1to1 Movement is rebranding the story on sustainability through high-impact educational programs, campaigns, and events. The organizational focus on story telling allows for 1to1 to reach community members who otherwise feel disconnected from the environmental movement.

The organization's educational programmatic focus is the primary effort. Having reached over 22,000 students in small group, interactive, project-based learning classes, 1to1 Movement has been able to effectively develop a series of successful experiential learning projects.

In addition to educational programming, 1to1 Movement has become an industry leader in Southern California as an environmental voice on food systems, water conservation, waste diversion, and alternative transportation and energy.

  • History:
  • 1to1 Movement was formed in 2011 with a focus on creating cleaner, greener, healthier, and more vibrant communities through positive bottom-up, top-down educational programs and community support campaigns. Founders Jonathan Zaidman and Amanda Tatum had been working for a large multi-mational NGO and the US Dept of Defense, respectively. They collectively longed to return to grassroots campaigns and community education and activism.

1to1 founders looked at their communities and saw a disconnect between those passionate about sustainability issues and those who had been made to feel as if adopting a more sustainable lifestyle is unattainable. Through their personal, academic, and professional experience, Amanda and Jonathan sought to create an organization focused on creating entry points into the world of conservation. The goal was to create a narrative that highlighted the inclusivity, instead of exclusivity, of what we can all do to benefit our communities.

Now in its fourth year, The 1to1 Movement has reached 22,586 students with innovative and experiential environmental and community health educational programs. 1to1 has won a variety of awards and generated exposure and visibility for the unique nature of their programming, such as the AWAY Project, in which students collect their waste for a week and conduct an individualized waste audit at week's end.

1to1 Movement has grown from a startup organization with two unpaid staffers to a sustainable and established group with a growing regional scope.
