AISEDA is a non-profit community organization (Nov. 23, 2005) established and run primarily by African immigrants and refugees in the Fort Wayne area in partnership with several community organizations.
Fort Wayne is a designated destination for political refugees. Catholic Charities is the main resettlement agency in the area. Since 2000, several hundred African refugees and asylees have been resettled here, but thousands have moved here by secondary migration.
The mission of AISEDA is to help refugees and new immigrants become self-sufficient economically, understand American culture, become contributing partners in American society, and develop into productive citizens. In order to fulfill the simple goals of AISEDA’s mission, there are significant barriers to overcome:
Lack of English language skills
Inadequate job skills
Lack of understanding of the American Credit system
Different cultural values which can impact maintaining a job, preserving family and interacting with neighbors
AISEDA works to help the family unit or individual (case by case) to surmount these barriers so that they can not only adjust to life in the United States, but become happy, productive citizens who no longer need TANF, food stamps or other assistance. They begin their new lives here in poverty, arriving with absolutely nothing. It is a struggle for them to rise out of poverty and not only become self-reliant, but also become able to assist others as part of a bigger community. Programs were created and planned for by Board and staff members, as well as volunteers, based on needs expressed by proposed clients.
AISEDA began in November, 2003 with an organizational meeting of concerned members of the African immigrant population and representatives of several community organizations. The first location for programs was at 1223 E. Wayne Street. During 2004, the first programs were run at this facility, which was soon too small for the number of participants. During 2004, AISEDA board prepared and submitted an application for a 501 (c)3 which was granted in November, 2005.
Programs with African refugees continued through 2006 and 2007. Partnerships with Project Renew (financial literacy), East Wayne Street (Child care), and Literacy Alliance (KeyTrain software) were important for enabling AISEDA to expand its services. Hispanic and Burmese refugees and immigrants came by word of mouth. Larger facilities were found and AISEDA moved to its present location in January 2008.
AISEDA began with African refugees for the first 2 years, but, due to the influx of an unexpected number of refugees from Burma, AISEDA expanded its services and added a new English instructor specifically for Burmese clients in 2008 who also serves as a translator when needed. Current clients include those from African countries, Burma and other areas. A grant through the Kuhne Foundation provided updated computer equipment and a donor-advised grant from the Knight Foundation allowed AISEDA to purchase a used van for transportation. AISEDA is also using a van borrowed from a local church.
Because AISEDA is able to offer English classes at night as well as during the day, there is great demand and classes are filled to overflowing. The van driver must make several trips to bring all the people who are eager to learn and still some are left behind. As funds are available, AISEDA plans to add additional teachers and purchase a larger van for transportation. AISEDA also is working on developing a larger donor base and volunteer network.
