- Organization Name:Aids Leadership Foothills Area Alliance (ALFA)
- Address:1120 Fairgrove Church Road SE
Hickory, NC 28602
ALFA's mission is to improve the lives and health affected by HIV/AIDS while preventing transmission through education and testing.
ALFA respectfully requests $5000 funding towards core support of our comprehensive HIV prevention, testing and case management programs. This funding will ensure the continuation of ALFA’s life saving services to our community.
Rates of HIV disease and other sexually transmitted diseases (STDs) are disproportionately high in the Southern United States and the HIV epidemic is more concentrated than in other regions among rural residents, with 68% of all AIDS cases in the American South among rural populations. The South also has some of the highest levels of poverty and uninsured individuals in the nation factors that complicate the prevention and treatment of HIV infection. The Center for Disease Control and Prevention ranked North Carolina 9th among states for the number of new AIDS cases with 25% of cases reported from the rural areas of the state.
ALFA Services and Programs:
Medical Case Management: Medical Case Managers (MCM) assist clients into treatment and to remain in medical care. MCMs provide medical adherence support, prevention with positives, bridge counseling to keep clients in care and self-empowerment. MCMs also provide clients with emergency financial assistance, housing assistance and we operate an emergency food pantry.
Prevention Education: Health Educators offer free programs on HIV/AIDS awareness and prevention. Abstinence is the base of all school based curriculums; all other programs are comprehensive.
Community Outreach: Health Educators offer a variety of community awareness events including: World AIDS Day, The Black Church Week of Prayer, National HIV Testing Day, and AIDS Awareness month. Other outreach activities include bar sweeps, condom drops, and presentations to congregations, clubs and civic groups.
Testing and Counseling: Health Educators offer free and confidential HIV testing and counseling. Tests are administered at the ALFA office and in community settings.
Volunteer Service: The Community Outreach Manager recruits and trains volunteers to provide services to our community. Services include working with clients, education programs, HIV counseling and testing and community outreach. To maximize community impact, ALFA has developed a corps of Community Health Educators. These advanced volunteers provide Prevention Education programs and HIV counseling and testing in the community. All Community Health Educators receive additional training and supervision.
In 2014 ALFA provided:
• 5,588 individuals with education about HIV/AIDS,
• 906 individuals with HIV testing and counseling,
• 184 people living with HIV/AIDS medical case management services,
• 3,046 meals provided to ALFA clients
• 28 new clients with case management services
• 21 clients successfully progressed to no longer need MCM services
• 2,882 volunteers opportunities to serve with a savings of over $55,000 for the agency.
The AIDS Leadership Foothills-area Alliance (ALFA) was organized in 1987 as a grassroots effort to provide support services for those infected by HIV/AIDS in Burke County. In 1989, ALFA was established as a private, not-for-profit, 501 (c)(3) AIDS Service Organization, with the help of a Burke County United Way Venture Grant. Now nearing our fourth decade, ALFA has remained a United Way funded agency, and currently has a staff of seven full-time employees including four Medical Case Managers and two Health Educators (Outreach Department), and a COO/CFO.
ALFA has a dedicated board of directors made up of 11 diverse members from across ALFA’s service area. The board participates 100% to the financial stability of ALFA and is a fully-engaged agent of the mission. Board of Directors promote ALFA’s programs, services, and vision.
ALFA is the only HIV/AIDS Service Organization serving the Appalachian Mountains and Foothills of rural Northwestern North Carolina. The region consists of nine counties: Alexander, Alleghany, Ashe, Burke, Caldwell, Catawba, Lincoln, Watauga and Wilkes.
