- Mission:
The mission of the Food Bank of Central & Eastern North Carolina is to harness and supply resources so that no one goes hungry in central and eastern North Carolina.
- History:
The Food Bank of Central & Eastern North Carolina (Food Bank) opened in 1980 as the first food bank in the state. In 1981, the service area expanded and the Food Bank founded its first branch in the Sandhills region. On three separate occasions since then, the Food Bank has outgrown warehouse space due to increasing demands and an expanding service area. In 1983, the organization moved to a 10,000 square foot warehouse and in 1990 to a 36,000 square foot warehouse. By 1995, the number of partner agencies and food distribution had increased to the point that additional space was again needed. Through a charitable lead trust, a 40,000 square foot warehouse with refrigerator and freezer spaces was donated to the Food Bank and this site became the organization's headquarters branch.
In 1999, Hurricane Floyd devastated eastern North Carolina; the Food Bank responded with the largest distribution in its history. Demands for emergency food and from partner agencies not affected by the storm resulted in the distribution of approximately 18.8 million pounds of food. The Food Bank also established two additional branch warehouses in 1999, at Durham and Greenville. The Food Bank of Coastal Carolina became a branch through the merger of the two organizations in December 2002.
The Food Bank currently provides more than 3 million pounds of food a month to 800 nonprofit partner agencies operating almost 1,000 programs - food pantries, soup kitchens, homeless shelters, after-school programs, day care and senior care programs, sheltered workshops and group homes -serving more than 480,000 individuals at risk of hunger in 34 counties covering 19,000 square miles. In February 2008 the Food Bank received a four-star rating for the seventh consecutive year by Charity Navigator, indicating its exceptional and fiscally responsible performance.
In fiscal year 2009, the Food Bank set a new record for food distribution by providing almost 37 million pounds of food to its partner agencies and directly to rural communities. The distribution goal for fiscal year 2009-10 is 40 million pounds.
