  • History:
  • The Northlake Nature Center, Inc. was established in 1982 as an independent non-profit corporation directed to preserve, study, and publicly exhibit the natural and cultural resources of southeast Louisiana and the Florida Parishes. In 1985, the NNC entered into a 50-year lease with the State of Louisiana for a 52-acre tract of land situated along Bayou Castine in Mandeville, La. Mandeville lies on the north shore of Lake Pontchartrain, 24 miles across the longest bridge in the world from the City of New Orleans. In 1999 an additional 350 acres was added to the NNC site under a new long-term lease with the State of Louisiana.
Remnants of the 1700’s virgin longleaf pine forest saved from loggers in the 1920’s and 1930’s thrive at the NNC. The NCC is on the path of many migrant birds returning from wintering in Mexico and Central America. The NNC hosts an annual BirdFest to coincide with this natural phenomenon. An archaeological survey has yielded evidence that a 700-year-old Acolapissa Native American population once inhabited the NNC site.
The main focus of the Northlake Nature Center has been the environmental conservation project of the long leaf pine forest to reforest areas devastated by southern pine beetles in 1995. Since then, 3000+ long-leaf pine seedlings have been planted yearly. Additional, continual expansion of the 6 miles of trails throughout NNC and linkage to the 31 mile Rails to Trails hiking and biking corridor in St. Tammany Parish (county) has been part of the master plan.
