General

  • Mission:
  • At Manhattan East, our school mission is to provide a safe and caring learning environment for our students that fosters respect for self and others, high academic expectations, and an appreciation of and a working knowledge of the arts. This approach goes beyond a mere integration of the arts into the curriculum, and instead recognizes each student's need to achieve both academic excellence and individual artistic expression. Using the best of both traditional methods and new technology, facilitated by dedicated teachers working in collaboration with, and supported by, parents, staff, and the community, Manhattan East provides a place where students can grow in many different dimensions.

  • History:
  • In 1981 a group of teachers decided to form a school that would stress not only academics success but provide students with in depth access to the arts. The school has regents opportunities for eighth graders as well as a full time art and music teacher on staff. As an institution we have been fortunate to be recognized in Inside Schools and a recipient of the Blackboard Awards. One of the things we are proudest of is our diversity. We believe that we truly reflect the population of NYC racially and socioeconomically. As an open zoned school we accept students from every borough in NYC. We have a 95% attendance rate even though the majority of our students travel more than an hour to get to school.
