  • The Mission of Family Service Association of the Wabash Valley, Inc. is to improve the quality of life for all by providing affordable, relevant, and high quality counseling services.

  • History:
  • 1862 The Ladies’ Aid Society was established for the relief of soldier’s families.
    1883 The Friendly Inn was opened to help serve the homeless, where Awork was made an absolute condition to aid@.

    1907 The Society established several new agencies, including the Fresh Air Mission.
    1912 The Society established the Tuberculosis Association.
    1917 The Society helped found the local American Red Cross Chapter.
    1919 The Society organized the Welfare League, today called the Wabash Valley Community Foundation.

    1930's The Society set up the first Governor=s Unemployment Relief offices in Sullivan and other nearby counties and concentrated on emergency relief and fund raising.
    1935 The Society became the Family Welfare Society of Terre Haute (FWS).
    1937 The Family Welfare Society became a hospital site for six weeks after the Ohio-Mississippi Valley flood.
    193? The FWS provided the data base for the Central Index, a precursor of United Way.
    1948 The FWS became Family Service Association of Terre Haute, a counseling agency.

    1971 FSA moved into offices located at Hamilton Center.
    1982 FSA moved into the present location at 619 Cherry Street.
    1984 FSA first accredited by Counsel on Accreditation of Services to Families & Children.
    1993 FSA became Family Service Association of the Wabash Valley, Inc.
    1994 Incubated Gary=s Place, a safe house for teen girls.


    2000 Began the Reading is Fundamental (RIF) program at Fuqua Grade School.
    2001 FSA began doing business as FSA Counseling & Behavioral Health.
    2002 Re-accredited by COASFC until 2006.
    2003 Began providing services at Vigo County Jail and Vigo County Community Corrections.
    2005 Received license from the state of Indiana to begin facilitating adoptions.
    2005 Received ICADV approval for our domestic violence program, one of only nine in the State of Indiana.
