Background

YPK aims to decrease the dependency of physically disabled people on others and in turn increase the quality of life for its patients.
2001
In many parts of Indonesia, and most certainly in Hindu Bali, it is believed that having a child with disabilities is evidence of bad karma. Many people believe the child is being punished for wrong-doings in a past life and that an evil spirit of a deceased ancestor has been reincarnated in the child. For this reason, having a child with disabilities is a disgrace to a Balinese family. These children are often hidden away by their families from the rest of society and are not given an opportunity to go to school or receive any medical care.

Although attitudes towards people with disabilities are slowing changing, support from the Indonesian government is strictly limited. Without assistance from the private sector and more particularly non-profit organizations such as Yayasan Peduli Kemanusiaan, most disabled people in Bali will remain marginalized from society and thus lead a recluse, lonely and unfulfilling life.

YPK was established on 7 April 2001, in Denpasar, Bali, as a non profit organization with a vision of providing physical therapy and moral support to people with disabilities. Over the last 7 years, YPK has effectively treated over 170 patients suffering from varying conditions such as bone deformities, Cerebral Palsy, Multiple Sclerosis, as well as people who have lost movement and/or mobility following a stroke or other physical traumas such as road accidents.
