- Mission:
The Shelter’s mission is to lead the community to prevent, protect and prevail over domestic violence through advocacy, empowerment and social change.
Our vision is to make every home a safe haven for the family it shelters.
- History:
The Shelter for Abused Women & Children was incorporated by a group of concerned citizens as a private Florida non-profit organization and received its 501 (c) (3) status in 1986. In 1989, the original 20-bed facility was opened to those who were homeless as a result of domestic violence. Over the years, The Shelter has grown from a 20-bed facility to a 60-bed state-of-the-art domestic violence center providing innovative programs and services to women, children and men. The Shelter has received a 4 star rating and is included in a list of the 14 top-rated domestic violence organizations across the United States by America’s premier independent charity evaluator, Charity Navigator.
