- History:
Benton Soil & Water Conservation District, which is classified as a 170 (c)(1) tax exempt special district, began as an all-volunteer, 5 member board in 1956. In 1957, 35 farmers signed farmer-district agreements for conservation farm plans; assistance given to 34 farmers; engineering assistance given to 67 participants in the Benton County Agricultural Conservation program. Since that time, the District has grown to a 7-member board with a staff of 7. In 2004, Benton SWCD received a tax levy of $.05/$1,000 appraised value. Our two main programs are: 1) technical assistance and on-the ground conservation projects; 2)K-12 and adult outreach & education focused on conservation topics.
