- Mission:
The mission of Lakes Crisis & Resource Center: To confront violence and oppression, promote safety, healing, empowerment and hope for all through intervention, advocacy and education.
As a nonprofit community advocacy program, the goal of Lakes Crisis & Resource Center is to provide high quality services to victims of violence. These services include a 24-hour crisis hotline; legal, systems and personal advocacy; support groups, public and professional education, information and referral; and safe exchange and visitation services.
Lakes Crisis & Resource Center considers living in a safe, violenc- and abuse-free environment to be one of our most basic human rights. We dedicate ourselves to confronting oppression and violence in the pursuit of respect, justice and equality for all. We must be fully committed to the human rights of all if we are to make progress in breaking the cycle of violence.
- History:
In 1978, a group of concerned citizens began sowing the seeds of social change in the Detroit Lakes and Becker County area by coming together to address the needs of battered women in the community and forming an organization named Lakes Area Coalition for Battered Women. This all-volunteer organization put a crisis line into effect, with volunteer advocates serving on call for many years. In the mid 80’s, the organization expanded its services to include victims of sexual assault and became Lakes Area Service for Rape and Domestic Violence. In 1989, it became apparent that the requests for service exceeded that which could be properly managed by an all-volunteer work force. A coordinator and advocates were hired in October 1989, as a result of an Otto Bremer Foundation grant. The agency has grown dramatically in focus, programming and services since that time, responding to the emerging needs within the community and surrounding area.
Since 2001, Lakes Crisis & Resource Center has owned the building in which it is housed. Located in downtown Detroit Lakes, next to courts and other services, Lakes Crisis & Resource Center provides quality crisis intervention and resource services seven days a week.
