• Mission:

WLWCA's mission is to assist county Land Conservation Committees and Departments with the protection, enhancement and sustainable use of Wisconsin's natural resources and to represent them through education and governmental interaction.

• History:

Wisconsin is the birthplace of conservation farming. In the years following the Dust Bowl the federal government established the Soil Conservation Service within the Department of Agriculture to develop ways to prevent a repeat of the disaster of the Dust Bowl. The SCS established trial farms within the Coon Creek watershed in Western Wisconsin and conservation farming was born. Throughout the country these methods were being promoted through newly established conservation districts. In the 1950s, members of Wisconsin's conservation districts decided that they needed a statewide association to assist in dissemination of information and to hold an annual meeting where district supervisors could exchange information. WLWCA's earliest precursor was then established. In 1982 the Wisconsin legislature abolished the conservation districts and left all authority for soil and water conservation in the hands of the county conservation committee. Counties formed Land and Water Conservation Departments, and that is how it remains today.
